First aid for irritated armpits

Redness, tenderness, swelling, flaking, bumps and itching. Each of these unpleasant symptoms are associated with irritated armpits. How do irritated armpits occur, and more importantly, how do you get rid of it? Do you ever suffer from irritated armpits? We have put together some of the most common causes and most important tips for you.

Causes

Skin irritation can occur in many different ways. Our armpits namely have to endure quite a bit. To treat this irritation it is important to find out in what way the irritation is caused.

A common cause of irritation under your arms is deodorant. Especially when the armpits have just been shaved. This is because there is more skin to skin contact then, and this makes the armpits extra sensitive. If this is the case, it is best to wait a while after shaving before applying deodorant. It can also help to not shave your armpits for a while, so the skin under your arms has time to recover.

Furthermore, it is possible to experience irritation by just shaving. This is often caused by a razor that is too blunt. Therefore, try to replace your razor regularly. Also, it is recommended to always use shaving cream while shaving. To take extra care of your armpits, you can apply moisturising cream after shaving.

Finally, irritants or allergens, such as detergent or soap can also cause contact eczema. Have you recently switched products and have you been experiencing irritation since then? If so, there is a good chance that this is the cause. Certain clothing such as synthetics or wool can also cause a hypersensitivity reaction.
